Tongues of History

Large Format Photography & Direct Positive Paper Workshop

This workshop draws on the history of the local area, with a focus on Graveney School’s Grade 2 listed Furzedown House. Dating from the 18 century, the building was enlarged with a conservatory and a lodge in the 1860s, and in 1915 it became part of the Furzedown Training College.

Today it embodies over one hundred years of teaching history and it is dedicated to teaching Art, Photography, Music, Drama, and English. In this collaborative workshop, you will work on strategies to activate this history through writing, performance and photography. In the process, you will learn how to use a large format camera and how to shoot and process direct positive paper. The workshop is limited to 12 participants to ensure there is enough time for individual guidance and a productive group dynamic.

Learner Level: Intermediate - Experienced

Intermediate - You have ample experience working in a Black and White Darkroom, can develop a roll of film (35mm, 120mm, 5x4”) and hand print photographs (on resin coated or fibre based paper) without guidance.

Experienced - You are confident and capable of working independently (unaided) in the black and white darkroom. You have copious experience developing film (35mm, 120mm, 4x5”) in both traditional and alternative ways, alongside a mastery of printing photographs (on both fibre based and resin coated paper) at a range of scales from 8x10 to 50x60”.
